Legal Researcher
(Canada Summer Jobs Student funded by the Government of Canada)
The Legal Resource Centre of Alberta Ltd. operating as: Centre for Public Legal Education Alberta (CPLEA), is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic individual to fill the full time summer position of Legal Researcher (35 hours per week for approximately 15 weeks).
At CPLEA we provide understandable information to Albertans about the laws that affect their lives. We do it through print publications, websites, email, phone, in-person and through our electronic publication – LawNow.
As a Legal Researcher you must be interested in helping people find access to justice and be a strong plain language writer with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
Job Description
- This is a hybrid position, with Tuesday through Thursday in the office and remote work on Mondays and Fridays
- What you will be doing:
- Updating written answers to frequently asked questions on one of our websites
- Researching and drafting content for resources called “Know Your Legal Rights”
- Drafting articles for our online publication LawNow.org
- Helping collect information about our housing law stakeholders
- Help with video planning
- Other legal research as directed by our staff lawyers
Qualifications
- You have successfully completed at least one year of law school
- You are proficient with the basic MS Office programs (primarily Word and Excel)
- You are a “people person” with strong interpersonal and networking skills. You will be able to work collaboratively with CPLEA staff, volunteers, partners and advisors from the community
- As this position is funded by the Canada Summer Jobs program, you must:
- Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, between 15 and 30 years of age
- Be legally entitled to work according to Alberta legislation and regulations
Hourly wage $25.00/hour

Public Legal Education Lawyer & Editor
Full time – Maternity Leave Position for minimum 7 months with possibility of extension.
The current salary range for this position is $65,000 to $75,000 per year.
This is a hybrid position, with 3 days a week in office and up to 2 days working remotely.
For 50 years, CPLEA has been providing Albertans with current, practical and plain language information and education about the laws and legal processes that impact their lives. We provide information in multiple formats including websites, a blog (LawNow), print, videos and webinars. Our process includes legal research, writing, review, design, publishing and evaluation. What you will be doing:
- Helping plan, research, write and edit plain language resources in various formats
- Researching the laws and legal processes in Alberta, including staying on top of any changes to the law
- Acting as interim Editor of CPLEA’s popular blog – LawNow www.lawnow.org, including connecting with volunteer contributors, and editing and posting articles
- Planning and delivering webinars about various legal topics to the public and service providers who support Albertans with legal issues
- Helping assess community needs for public legal information and education resources
The qualifications, skills, abilities and interests you have:
- A law degree (LLB or JD) and are eligible to be a member of the Law Society of Alberta (active practice status in not required)
- At least two years’ relevant experience
- Very strong plain language writing skills
- Proficiency with Word, Excel and Outlook and knowledge of WordPress (or are not afraid to learn!)
- Strong interpersonal and networking skills and the ability to work collaboratively with CPLEA staff, volunteers, partners and community stakeholders
- An interest in helping people find access to justice
The following skills or experience would be assets (but are not all expected):
- Experience writing and editing plain language educational materials
- A good understanding of wills and estates and employment law
- Experience coordinating programs or projects
- Experience in the non-profit sector, especially in a public interest law environment • Experience working with an organization which serves vulnerable people
- A valid driver’s license and access to a dependable, insured vehicle
